Protect Eday: New Wind Farm – Orkney

Protecting Eday: Why This Small Island Needs Your Voice Before 17th August

Another energy development is threatening one of Scotland’s most unique and unspoiled places—and this time, it’s the island of Eday in Orkney.

A planning application (ref. 25/203/TPPMAJ) has been submitted to construct five large industrial wind turbines and a battery energy storage system (BESS) on the island, along with the roads, landing sites, and infrastructure required to support them.

The scale of this proposal is entirely out of proportion with Eday’s size, character, and capacity. If approved, it would permanently alter the landscape, damage protected habitats, and impose risks on a community with limited emergency infrastructure.

🌿 What’s at Risk?

  • Eday’s natural beauty and peaceful landscape, which would be dominated by tall turbine structures and heavy infrastructure.
  • Cultural and archaeological heritage, including sites like the Greentoft burnt mound, whose settings would be irreversibly affected.
  • Ecology and biodiversity, especially within the Ward Hill and Chapel Hill Local Nature Conservation Site.
  • Community safety, given that the turbines are planned close to flammable peatland, and Eday has no fire and rescue service.
  • Local livelihoods, especially small businesses that rely on tourism and the island’s tranquil setting.

🗓️ The Deadline Is 17th August 2025

If you believe that Eday should not be industrialised, now is the time to act. The official deadline for submitting objections is Sunday 17th August, which is fast approaching.

Objecting only takes a couple of minutes—and your voice could help protect Eday for future generations.
