A major battery storage facility ( BESS ) is being proposed on farmland just north of Tealing Substation, Dundee — placing residents, wildlife, and the local environment at serious risk.

17 Acres BESS - Tealing Dundee
Location of Proposed Development – Tealing Near Dundee

The developer, ABEI Energy, is seeking consent to install a 100 MW lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage System ( BESS ) on a 17-acres site less than 100 metres from homes and alongside the Fithie Burn. If approved, this development would industrialise a quiet rural landscape and introduce a hazardous energy installation without meaningful community consultation or safety planning.

⚠️ What’s Wrong With This Proposal?

  • Fire and Explosion Risk: No fire safety plan, no engagement with fire services, and no emergency evacuation strategy.
  • Environmental Damage: No proper surveys for bats, badgers or protected species. Sensitive habitats would be destroyed.
  • Toxic Runoff Threat: The site slopes towards Fithie Burn. In the event of fire or flood, chemicals could contaminate water and farmland.
  • Noise, Light and Visual Harm: Continuous low-frequency noise and 24/7 lighting would disturb residents, animals, and wildlife.
  • Lack of Transparency: Only two poorly attended drop-in events were held. There’s been no proper public engagement.
  • No Decommissioning Plan: No strategy for what happens when the batteries reach end-of-life. Who pays to clean it up?

🛑 Why You Should Object

This is not a small or harmless project — it’s a 100 MW industrial energy installation in the middle of the countryside, in an area already saturated with substations, transmission lines, and other infrastructure. Tealing is becoming a dumping ground for high-risk energy projects, with no strategic plan, no cumulative assessment, and no regard for the health and safety of those who live nearby.

This proposal is being pushed forward under Section 36 of the Electricity Act, which means Scottish Ministers will make the final decision. That’s why every public objection counts.
