A major wind farm and battery storage development is being proposed at Euchanhead in Dumfries and Galloway, with access infrastructure extending into East Ayrshire. The plans include 19 turbines up to 230 metres high, extensive new tracks, and large scale associated infrastructure. This is a significant industrial scheme being brought forward under Section 36 of the Electricity Act.
The site lies in an especially sensitive area, close to the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere, the Thornhill Uplands Regional Scenic Area, dark sky landscapes, and the Southern Upland Way. These are places valued for their scenery, wildlife, tranquillity, recreation, and cultural heritage. The proposal would add further pressure to an area already experiencing heavy cumulative wind farm development.
There are serious concerns about landscape and visual harm, impacts on tourism and recreation, loss of biodiversity, peatland disturbance and carbon release, flood risk, noise, residential amenity, aviation lighting, public safety, and the fairness of the decision making process. The claimed economic benefits are limited and uncertain, while the environmental and community impacts are long term and irreversible.
