The proposed Charleston Energy Park (ECU00005190), near Barrock and Mey, would introduce five 180-metre wind turbines, a 25 MW battery storage facility and extensive infrastructure into the Caithness countryside. The applicant’s own assessments identify significant landscape and visual impacts, alongside concerns over noise, shadow flicker, road safety and residential amenity.
The development would also disturb approximately 68,862 cubic metres of peat and carbon-rich soils, permanently remove 12.9 hectares of woodland and potentially affect protected wildlife. Further concerns include flooding, battery fire safety and potential conflicts with planning policies.

The landscape around Barrock, Mey and the North Caithness coast is known for its open countryside, expansive views towards the Pentland Firth, peaceful rural settlements and largely dark night skies. Its natural character is valued by residents and visitors, including those travelling along the North Coast 500.
Although not nationally designated, this landscape remains distinctive and important. Five turbines reaching 180 metres, together with associated infrastructure and aviation lighting, would significantly alter its rural character, with the applicant’s own assessment identifying significant adverse visual effects on nearby communities and established routes.
